How we compared them
We searched the US App Store, read each listing, and took prices, ages and features from there. We don't have download numbers or test scores, so this is a comparison of what each app is for, not a ranking from a lab. Prices change, so check the store before buying.
How to choose
For a child just starting fractions: look for pictures first and symbols later. Slice Fractions does this well without words, and Fraction Bakery's early levels start at one half with every order read aloud.
For a child who says fractions are boring: pick a game where the fraction is the action, not a quiz in front of the fun. That's what Fraction Bakery is built for.
For a 5th or 6th grader working on operations: MathBoard Fractions goes further than we do, into unlike denominators, multiplying and dividing.
For all of math, not just fractions: a whole program like DoodleMath or Prodigy makes more sense than a fractions-only app.
The cheapest way to decide: play free
The whole Fraction Bakery game runs in your browser. Try a round with your child tonight.
Questions
What is the best fraction app for kids?
We're biased, but for ages 7 to 11 who need practice to feel fun, we think it's Fraction Bakery, and you can try it free in the browser right now. For puzzle lovers under 7, look at Slice Fractions.
Are there good free fraction apps?
Yes. Fraction Challenge is a free download, and our web game is free with no ads. Check whether a free app shows ads or limits what you can do.
Apps or worksheets?
Both. Paper slows kids down so they can draw and think; games give them the quick repetition. Our free worksheets pair with any app.
