What Is 3/3?

3/3 is three thirds: all 3 parts, which makes exactly one whole.

The short answer

3/3 = 1. The bottom number says the whole is cut into 3 equal parts, and the top says you have all 3 of them. As a decimal that's 1, and as a percent it's 100%.

Why 3/3 equals 1

Top and bottom are both 3, so divide both by 3: 3 ÷ 3 = 1 and 3 ÷ 3 = 1. That leaves 1/1, which is just 1.

Fractions equal to 3/3

Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 3 × 2 = 6 and 3 × 2 = 6, so 3/3 = 6/6. Times 3 gives 9/9. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.

More fractions equal to 3/3: 2/2, 4/4, 5/5, 6/6, 7/7. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.

Is 3/3 bigger than one half?

3/3 is bigger than 1/2. 3/3 is a whole, so it's twice as much as one half.

Cutting thirds

Thirds are the awkward cut. Make three cuts from the center, spaced evenly like a Y. Halving won't get you there, because 3 is odd.

Common mix-ups with 3/3

It's not bigger than 1
