What Is 4/4?
4/4 is four quarters: all 4 parts, which makes exactly one whole.
4/4 = 1. The bottom number says the whole is cut into 4 equal parts, and the top says you have all 4 of them. As a decimal that's 1, and as a percent it's 100%.

Why 4/4 equals 1
Top and bottom are both 4, so divide both by 4: 4 ÷ 4 = 1 and 4 ÷ 4 = 1. That leaves 1/1, which is just 1.
Fractions equal to 4/4
Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 4 × 2 = 8 and 4 × 2 = 8, so 4/4 = 8/8. Times 3 gives 12/12. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.
More fractions equal to 4/4: 2/2, 3/3, 5/5, 6/6, 7/7. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.
Is 4/4 bigger than one half?
4/4 is bigger than 1/2. 4/4 is a whole, so it's twice as much as one half.
4/4 in real life
Share the 12 into 4 equal groups: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 in each group. Take 4 groups: 3 × 4 = 12.
An hour has 60 minutes. 60 ÷ 4 = 15, and 15 × 4 = 60 minutes.
Cut in half, then cut across the first cut. Each half has been halved, so four equal slices.
Common mix-ups with 4/4
