What Is 5/5?
5/5 is five fifths: all 5 parts, which makes exactly one whole.

Why 5/5 equals 1
Top and bottom are both 5, so divide both by 5: 5 ÷ 5 = 1 and 5 ÷ 5 = 1. That leaves 1/1, which is just 1.
Fractions equal to 5/5
Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 5 × 2 = 10 and 5 × 2 = 10, so 5/5 = 10/10. Times 3 gives 15/15. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.
More fractions equal to 5/5: 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 6/6, 7/7. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.
Is 5/5 bigger than one half?
5/5 is bigger than 1/2. 5/5 is a whole, so it's twice as much as one half.
5/5 in real life
Share the 15 into 5 equal groups: 15 ÷ 5 = 3 in each group. Take 5 groups: 3 × 5 = 15.
An hour has 60 minutes. 60 ÷ 5 = 12, and 12 × 5 = 60 minutes.
Fifths can't come from halving either. Start with one cut from the center, then space four more evenly, like the points of a star.
Common mix-ups with 5/5
