Fractions on a Number Line
Cut the line from 0 to 1 into as many equal jumps as the bottom number says, then count as many jumps as the top number says. For 3/4: four equal jumps, count three. Count the jumps, not the tick marks.
Why number lines matter
On a pie, a fraction is a piece of something. On a number line, it's a number with its own spot, between 0 and 1, bigger than this, smaller than that. That shift matters: it's the idea kids need for decimals, negative numbers and measuring with a ruler. It's also why US Common Core brings in number lines as early as 3rd grade (3.NF.A.2).
The mistake to watch for
Kids count tick marks instead of jumps. A line cut into 4 jumps has 5 marks, including 0 and 1, so they call the first mark 1/5. Have them run a finger along each jump and count hops, the way a frog would. The fraction is the distance from 0, not the mark itself.
A simple way to teach it
Start with a paper strip, folded into equal parts. Lay it above a drawn line and mark the folds. Label the jumps out loud: one fourth, two fourths, three fourths, four fourths. Notice that four fourths lands on 1. Then look for fractions past 1 if your class is ready: the jumps just keep going.
How to do it with Fraction Bakery

Questions people ask
How do you find a fraction on a number line?
Split 0 to 1 into equal jumps using the bottom number, then count jumps from 0 using the top number.
Where is 1/2 on a number line?
Exactly halfway between 0 and 1. So are 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8: equal fractions share a spot.
